Standards: Educational Programs 3.6.3 (graduate residence requirement) Compliance Explanation The minimum number of semester credit hours required for a doctoral degree at the university is 54 for students with a relevant master's degree and 72 for students without a relevant master's degree. Transfer credit is not awarded at the doctoral level.
In the professional program at the College of Veterinary Medicine, special courses during the first 3 years may include attendance at professional meetings, research experiences, or participation in small or large animal preceptorships at private veterinary clinics. The majority of credits, however, are earned through the institution. In the fourth year of the curriculum, externships may include clinical, research, or industrial sessions outside of the university, yet each experience must be pre-approved by the appropriate faculty member or dean.
In fall 2003, the university will offer a joint graduate program in Biomedical Engineering with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH). Students in the program will earn credits from NC State University and UNC-CH.
