Comprehensive Standards:  Institutional Mission, Governance, and Effectiveness 3.2.11 (authority over athletics)
The institution’s chief executive officer has ultimate responsibility for, and exercises appropriate administrative and fiscal control over, the institution’s intercollegiate athletics program.

Compliance
North Carolina State University is in compliance with this standard.

Explanation
As a constituent institution of the University of North Carolina system, NC State University’s compliance with this standard begins with The Code of the University of North Carolina, which confers on the chancellor all responsibility for “the establishment and supervision of the institution's program of intercollegiate athletics” (Appendix I, Article XIII).

The chancellor’s authority over the athletics program is reaffirmed and emphasized in NC State University’s Policy Statement on Intercollegiate Athletics.  In section 4.1, the policy elaborates on the chancellor’s responsibilities, including “overseeing the personnel and financial affairs associated with intercollegiate athletics and for upholding university policies.”

The policy further points out that the chancellor has the authority to define the responsibilities of the athletics director, to approve the annual operating budget for the athletics department, and to monitor institutional compliance with University of North Carolina, Atlantic Coast Conference and NCAA regulations.  The director of athletics reports directly to the chancellor.
