1999 Entering Transfer Student Survey:
Highlights
- NC State conducted its annual survey of entering transfer students during New Student Orientation sessions held in June and August 1999. The survey had a response rate of 61.4 percent, and a margin of error slightly over 1 percent (+1.4%) at the 95 percent confidence level.
- The factors rated most influential in the decision to attend NC State were availability of program (23.7%), location (21.3%), and academic reputation (20.2%).
- Over half (57.6%) of women compared to 37.2 percent of men said they intended to obtain a baccalaureate degree as preparation for graduate or professional school. Men, on the other hand, were more likely than women to say their primary goal was to earn a bachelor's degree as preparation for a career (46.2% vs. 34.3%).
- Substantially more women then men intend to go beyond a master's degree in their education (33.6% vs. 18.3%). Similarly, over one-third of African Americans (35.6%) and non-African American minorities (35.4%) intend to go beyond a master's degree, compared with only 23.8 percent of whites.
- Slightly less than half (44.3%) of entering transfer students report less than a 15 credit hour enrollment status in their first semester. The most common reasons for taking less than 15 credit hours given by those students were that they need to work (57.9%) and that they want better grades (49.3%).
- Students rated personal development goals as more important than general education and world view goals (9 of the 10 highest ratings). Goals central to the University's core general education curriculum received the lowest ratings for both perceived importance and the student's current development (understanding the present as it relates to history, developing an appreciation of the arts, understanding diverse cultures, and developing the ability to apply scientific principles).
