North Carolina State University
1999 Sophomore Student Survey:
Highlights
- NC State conducted its annual survey of sophomore students during the spring 1999 semester. Sixty-five percent of eligible sophomores responded and the margin of error for the results is very low (±
1% at the 95% confidence level).
- Nearly 90 percent of respondents said that NC State is satisfying their goals for intellectual growth. Two-thirds rated the intellectual environment strong or very strong; fewer than 5 percent rated it as weak. NC State’s contribution to respondents’ growth in technical and analytic skills was consistently rated as stronger than its contribution to their growth in communication skills and a broad world view.
- Faculty members’ expectations for student learning received the most positive ratings for faculty contributions to the respondent’s educational experience (good to excellent). Showing that they care about students’ academic success and welfare received the least positive ratings (fair to good).
- Overall, over 90 percent of respondents somewhat or strongly agreed that NC State is committed to helping minorities succeed, and three-quarters disagreed somewhat or strongly that there is a lot of racial conflict on campus. African American respondents were less likely to agree that the university is committed to their success, and more likely to say that there is a lot of racial conflict.
- Women and African American respondents were less likely to say that sufficient steps have been taken to ensure their safety on campus.
