Introduction - Classification of Instructional Programs(CIP 2000)

Updated September 2007

This report shows all of the programs offered at NC State University by the major name and abbreviation and by the six digit Classification of Instructional Programs(CIP 2000) code. Information about enrollment or graduation by program is reported to both state and federal agencies using this standard classification system.

CIP codes are the Department of Education's standard educational program classification system for all secondary and postsecondary schools. The CIP 2000 taxonomy is the current classification system. The Department of Education intermittently revises this taxonomy and adds new educational programs.

In the summer of 1999 UNC Office of the President converted from the Hegis-based Academic Program Inventory(API) to the newer CIP 1990 taxonomy for all reporting. All UNC system colleges converted to the CIP 2000 taxonomy in July 2004.

The CIP report shows CIP, curriculum, degree level, and CIP 1990 code for each major at NC State. Some non-active curricula are included in the report and these are indicated. The information is reported by CIP code, college and department.

Select CIP Category in the top of the frame on the left to point to CIP by major categories (2 digit). This report shows:

Select College in the top of the frame at the left to find curricula and program listing for a particular college. This report has the information shown above as well as

Please notify Lewis Carson at 919-515-2776, if you feel that a curriculum is not correctly assigned to a department or if you have other questions or concerns.
